Guardians of the Waves: Indian Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard seized 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine worth over ₹3,000 crore near Lakshadweep, highlighting India’s efforts to combat maritime drug trafficking and strengthen coastal security.

The Lakshadweep Interception
On the 25th of September, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), with  the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), intercepted an Iranian dhow west of Lakshadweep, seizing about 526 kgs of heroin and methamphetamine worth over Rs.3,000 crore. Acting on credible intel, the ICG tracked the vessel through aerial – maritime surveillance before a hot pursuit and boarding. Five Pakistani nationals were detained and taken to Mumbai for interrogation. The operation supports the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan of ICG in its commitment to combat narcotics trafficking and maritime terrorism.

Proven at Sea
The Operation at the Arabian sea wasn’t the only achievement but a testament to ICG’s persistence and operational caliber. In November 2024, a sea-air operation in the Andaman Sea led to the seizure of 6,016.87 kg of methamphetamine from a Myanmar-flagged vessel.

The ICG, with effect, strategically deploys its intelligence, technology and rapid response mechanisms to counter maritime threats.

Equipped for the Chase
Fast patrol vessels such as Rajratan and Rajveer, supported by Fast Interceptor Boats (FIB) and Fast Interceptor Crafts (FIC) enable efficient coastal surveillance, anti-smuggling operations and Search and Rescue (SAR) Missions. Its surveillance capacity is strengthened by the Dornier 228 aircraft that scans vast maritime areas; while coastal radars, the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and day-and-night cameras facilitate tracking of suspicious activities.

Strength in Coordination
Inter-agency coordination is equally vital. The Joint Operation Centre integrates information and directs ships and aircraft, while cooperation with the Indian Navy, Gujarat ATS and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) strengthens intelligence-led operations.

Guardian of the Sea Lanes
The ICG is paramount in safeguarding critical sea lanes, offshore infrastructure, and India’s broader maritime interests in addition to neutralising illicit maritime activities. Through the combination of technological, intelligence and operational capacities powered by seamless inter-agency cooperation and active response mechanisms, the ICG efficiently works towards strengthening India’s maritime architecture and security.
