On August 28. The Indian Army signed the letter of offer and acceptance for the US-made Javelin anti-tank missile system through the foreign military sales route. Washington’s notification puts the package at 100 missiles and 25 launch units worth approximately $45.7 million. The Javelin is a fire-and-forget, human-portable weapon in service with more than 25 countries. And the Indian Army has been seeking it since 2010.
The Co-Production Track
Alongside the sale, Tata Advanced Systems Limited and the Javelin Joint Venture (a partnership between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin) signed an MoU on co-production of the Javelin All Up Round in India. The MoU will explore a final assembly and integration facility, along with component production capabilities. While announcing the deal, the US Ambassador Sergio Gor spoke of it as a path to opening the door for co-production possibilities.
TATA is a natural choice for this partnership, as it already manufactures Apache fuselages, C-130J wings and F-16 components for American defense majors. In addition to this, its place in their supply chains is well established.
Why This Model Is Realistic
Larger collaborations, such as the licensed manufacture of the GE-414 engine for the Light Combat Aircraft Mk2, have taken years to move. The Javelin Deal presents a more tractable proposition. A missile is a far simpler product to localise than a jet engine, which allows final assembly and selected components to be taken up first and deepened over time. Since the purchase and the industrial discussion have begun together, localisation is part of the arrangement from the outset rather than being a distant promise.
From Order to Ecosystem
The order is small for an Army whose requirements exceed 40,000 missiles, and the MoU remains an intention rather than a factory. Yet the pairing of a proven weapon with an industrial pathway is encouraging. Once the assembly line takes shape, India stands to gain precision-munitions expertise that will serve its own programmes. With this, the defence partnership with the US will have a practical model to build upon. It is a measured beginning and a strong one.
